Airport Development Project December 2021

FOREWORD

November, 2021 is truly a good month for Belize’s aviation and tourism sectors as WestJet and Southwest Airlines resumed their Belize services while Alaska Air’s inaugural coincided with our nation’s commemoration of the Garifuna people’s history and spirituality, 19th November! On 11th December, Frontier launches its Belize services while Sun Country restarts its flights.

It is always a delight to welcome new airlines, increased visitors, better services, expanded destinations, and more competitive pricing. We are thankful for the scheduled services of American Airlines, COPA, Delta Airlines, TAG, United Airlines, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air whose airlift is critical to the national economy.

The traffic’s rebound offers all a chance to reflect, celebrate and look forward with hope; hope that we all function with a higher purpose to serve a broader community. Whether the uptick in passenger traffic climbs to stratospheric heights is a matter of faith, not fact.

As the year ends, our Company is thankful to the many folks from the Belize Airports Authority, Department of Civil Aviation, B.A.H.A., Belize Tourism Board, airlines, Departments of Immigration, Customs and Police, Air Traffic Controllers, tenants, visitors, porters, Taxi Union, Health officials, COCESNA, ORISA, T.S.A., I.A.T.A., Aviation Development Committee, our B.A.C.C. employees, and others for the small and large acts of courage and cooperation, whether in times of comfort and plenty or times of challenge and less.

In this Season of promise and reinvigoration, marked by the return of flyers and flights and an enhanced plan for efficient processing of passengers and cargo, we celebrate the spirit of Belizean co-workers who set about the constant daily collaborative work of revitalizing our hospitality sectors and the communities across the nation.

With bright colors everywhere and carol hymns to sing, heartfelt and warm thanks for your support throughout the year. Merry Christmas and good wishes to you and your Family in 2022 and beyond.

With Friendship,

Jorege L. Espat

Achieving Net-Zero Carbon Emissions.

Significant steps have been taken by the aviation industry, including air carriers and aircraft manufacturers, to achieve carbon neutrality and toward increasing the environmental sustainability of the industry. The International Air Transport Association in October, 2021 approved a resolution “for the global air transport industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”  Three specific avenues are being pursued: (i) the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (“CORSIA”); (ii) investment in sustainable aviation fuel (“SAF”) technology; and (iii) the development of electric aircraft.

At the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP26, representatives from nearly 200 countries gathered in Glasgow, Scotland to tackle the urgency of the climate crisis with the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels.  The following overarching goals have been set:

Restore and protect the ecosystems that make human life possible.
Ensure a rapid and equitable transition away from coal.
Make climate solutions profitable.
Shift the global vehicle fleet from gas-powered to electric.
Finalize the Paris Rule book to guarantee the integrity of carbon trading.
Persuade the world to invest in renewable energy.
Help vulnerable cities become more resilient.
Urge the developed world to share the burden.
